Brilliant Capsey seals series win and gives England selection poser

Brilliant Capsey seals series win and gives England selection poser

Title: Capsey’s Heroics Clinch Series and Complicate England’s T20 World Cup XI Dilemma

Alice Capsey delivered a stunning performance to secure a six-wicket victory over India in the third T20, ensuring England took the series 2-1. However, her masterclass has created a significant selection headache for the coaching staff as the team prepares for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Chasing a target of 181, England reached their goal with nine balls to spare, finishing at 184-4 in 18.3 overs. This result marks their second-highest T20 run chase in history and the highest achieved on home soil. The win serves as a major confidence booster for England, positioning them as strong contenders for the trophy they last won in 2017. They will now turn their attention to warm-up fixtures against India and Australia before facing Sri Lanka in the tournament opener on June 12.

A Partnership for the Ages

When 21-year-old Capsey came to the crease, England were struggling at 14-2, with Sophia Dunkley and Danni Wyatt-Hodge dismissed for 16 and 5 respectively. Capsey, who had previously scored a match-winning 74 not out against New Zealand, immediately changed the momentum. She smashed 82 runs off 43 balls, including nine fours and three sixes, forging a crucial 137-run partnership with Heather Knight.

Knight, who has faced scrutiny over her recent form this summer, responded brilliantly. She remained unbeaten on 70 from 42 deliveries, reaching her half-century in just 31 balls—the fastest milestone of her international career in any format. This performance was a stark contrast to her early-season struggles, where she had managed five innings averaging less than a run per ball.

While Knight targeted the gaps with sweeps and reverse shots, Capsey dominated the straight boundaries with power. Her innings included a magnificent carved drive over extra cover for six early on, and a powerful assault in the 15th over against spinner Sree Charani, which yielded a four and two massive sixes. Although Capsey was dismissed with six runs still required, England cruised to victory.

The Selection Conundrum

The result leaves coach Charlotte Edwards with her most difficult decision since taking charge last summer. With captain Nat Sciver-Brunt returning from injury, Capsey’s form places her in direct competition for a spot in the starting XI, potentially threatening the positions of Dunkley and Wyatt-Hodge.

Dunkley, who has opened in every T20 under Edwards, reached double figures for the fifth consecutive match before being caught at deep mid-wicket. Her highest score this summer remains 26. Wyatt-Hodge, who has scored 29 and five since returning from maternity leave, brings the experience of 179 international appearances to the table. However, Capsey’s dominance suggests that the current opening pairing may no longer be the preferred option.

Capsey appears fitter and more composed in 2026, and her ability to power the ball to the boundary lines has raised questions about whether the team can maintain the status quo. The upcoming World Cup will test whether England can replicate this high-quality performance under the intense pressure of the global stage, a challenge they have found difficult in recent years.

Bowling and Fielding Concerns

While England’s batting shone, their bowling was not at its best. India posted 180-5 in their 20 overs, with Linsey Smith conceding 40 runs from her four overs despite being ranked number one in T20 bowling. New-ball partner Lauren Bell was also unusually expensive early on, contributing to a powerplay total of 57 runs, despite the early wickets of Shefali Verma (11) and Harmanpreet Kaur (8).

However, England’s fielding was exceptional, reflecting the improvements made under Edwards. Sophie Ecclestone provided a highlight by running out Yastika Bhatia for an enterprising 32 with a direct hit from mid-off, showcasing the team's sharpness in the field even when their bowling figures were not perfect.
