Idris Elba and Torvill and Dean receive honours at Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle Honours Idris Elba, Torvill and Dean, and More Celebrities

Windsor Castle served as the backdrop on Tuesday for a ceremony where King Charles bestowed honours upon a select group of prominent figures, including actor Sir Idris Elba and Olympic ice dancing duo Torvill and Dean.

Sir Idris, 53, who rose to fame through roles in the US crime drama The Wire and the police procedural Luther, was knighted in the New Year Honours list in recognition of his contributions to youth development. His dedication to this cause is evident in his work; in 2022, he established the Elba Hope Foundation, an organization dedicated to sustainable development, youth advocacy, education, and community empowerment. The actor’s own path was aided by a grant from the Prince’s Trust—now renamed the King’s Trust—which enabled him to join the National Youth Music Theatre at the age of 18. Further highlighting his connection to the monarch, it was revealed last year that Elba would collaborate with King Charles on a documentary celebrating the 50th anniversary of the charity’s founding, scheduled for release on Netflix this autumn.

Also receiving knighthoods and damehoods were Sir Christopher Dean and Dame Jayne Torvill. The pair, celebrated for their services to ice skating and voluntary work, won Olympic gold at the 1984 Winter Games with their iconic performance to Bolero. They later became household names as the faces of ITV’s Dancing On Ice. Dame Jayne, 68, described the timing of the honour as "perfect," noting that it coincided with their final ice performance last year. "We had such a great time, we were so happy with the tour and the fact that we got through it," she said. "It was a big thing for us to mark our career before retirement, and then receiving this award at the end of the year, it's just finished everything. It's perfect." Beyond their athletic achievements, Dame Jayne has served as a celebrity ambassador for a South East children’s hospice for over two decades, while Sir Christopher has acted as a head coach and mentor for the British Ice Skating Academy of Dance.

Actress and comedian Dame Meera Syal was also honoured, this time for her contributions to literature, drama, and charity. Known for her roles in The Kumars At No 42 and Goodness Gracious Me, Syal’s career highlights include being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2017 and receiving the Bafta Fellowship in 2023, the British Academy’s highest career accolade. At 74, she serves as an ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society, a role she assumed in 2013 after the charity provided significant support during her father’s dementia diagnosis. She also supports Kisharon, an organization assisting Jewish children, young people, and adults with learning disabilities and autism.

Rounding out the Tuesday’s honours, Paul Elliott, the 68-year-old comedian best known as Paul Chuckle of the Chuckle Brothers, was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his charitable efforts. Elliott, along with his late brother Barry, created the beloved TV series ChuckleVision, which aired nearly 300 episodes throughout the 1990s and 2000s. The show featured the accident-prone brothers causing chaos while delivering their signature line, "To me, to you." Elliott has been a vocal advocate for Marie Curie, whose nurses provided compassionate end-of-life care for Barry. Elliott has publicly praised the staff for looking after his brother with "incredible care and kindness."
