Post Office scandal victim dedicates OBE to 'sub-postmasters we have lost'
Post Office Scandal Survivor Honors Deceased Colleagues with OBE
Betty Brown, the eldest remaining victim of the Post Office Horizon IT scandal, is set to be awarded an OBE at Windsor Castle today. Brown was among the hundreds of sub-postmasters falsely accused of theft, a charge that ultimately led to the closure of her County Durham branch in 2003. In an effort to rectify non-existent financial discrepancies, she and her late husband depleted over £50,000 of their personal savings.
Despite receiving the honor, Brown emphasized that the recognition extends beyond her. "It won’t be a Betty Brown medal," the former sub-postmaster stated, clarifying that the award is dedicated to "all the sub postmasters that we have lost."
The Horizon IT system, which provided inaccurate data, was the catalyst for the wrongful prosecution of more than 900 sub-postmasters. Across the United Kingdom, thousands of individuals were compelled to cover alleged shortfalls at their branches. According to government figures, the state has disbursed more than £1 billion in compensation to those affected by the scandal.
