Silva to leave Fulham as he closes in on Benfica move

Silva Set to Depart Fulham Amid Approaching Benfica Deal

Fulham manager Marco Silva has officially announced his departure from the club after a five-year tenure, revealing that he is on the verge of finalizing a contract to become the new boss at Benfica. The 48-year-old Portuguese coach, whose current agreement concludes at the end of June, has been close to securing the Lisbon role following months of speculation regarding his future. Although Fulham had offered Silva a fresh three-year contract to retain his services, he is now poised to move on.

Silva was installed as manager in 2021, taking charge of a team then competing in the Championship. He immediately delivered promotion in his inaugural season, subsequently transforming the London side into a consistent Premier League entity. His final campaign culminated in an 11th-place finish, secured by a victory against Newcastle on the last day of the season. In the preceding three seasons under his leadership, Fulham concluded in 10th, 13th, and 11th place, respectively.

In a heartfelt open letter to the supporters, Silva reflected on his time at the club. "After five years, our journey together comes to an end," he wrote. "To our fans - I asked you, from day one, to always be with us. And that's what you did these past five years. We achieved a lot together. 'My staff and I always felt your support. It will never be forgotten. Fulham will always be in my heart, and sooner or later I will be back at Craven Cottage."

Prior to his stint in England, Silva managed Hull City, Watford, and Everton.

Fulham owner Shahid Khan acknowledged the end of the partnership, stating that Silva and the club "were an excellent fit," but emphasized that "change is inevitable in this game, and we've accordingly prepared for this moment." Khan highlighted the club's enduring appeal, noting that "The talent in our squad, our historic home ground of Craven Cottage, our faithful supporters, and my commitment to backing the club, all make Fulham an extraordinarily attractive destination for an incoming head coach."

The club confirmed it would proceed with hiring a successor "in a timely but deliberate manner," ensuring the new leader aligns with the club's standards and global fanbase expectations.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that negotiations between Silva and Benfica have advanced considerably in recent days, with a deal now within reach. The Portuguese giants are seeking a replacement for Jose Mourinho, who recently departed to take charge of Real Madrid on a three-year contract.
