Scott poised to make England debut in World Cup friendlies
Title: England’s Alex Scott Ready for International Debut Ahead of World Cup Warm-Ups
Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott is on the verge of securing his first cap for England as the national team prepares for its World Cup warm-up matches in the United States. Scott has joined Rio Ngumoha, Josh King, Jason Steele, and Ethan Nwaneri as supplementary squad members during the team’s training camp in Florida.
The group is currently waiting for the arrival of five other key players who were occupied in European finals. Arsenal stars Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, and Noni Madueke, along with Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson, are scheduled to join the camp. Henderson is expected to arrive within the next 24 hours, while the remaining four players from Arsenal and Crystal Palace are anticipated to report for duty over the weekend.
Although these five individuals were not selected for Thomas Tuchel’s official 26-man World Cup roster, they are eligible to feature in the upcoming friendly matches against New Zealand and Costa Rica. The supplementary quintet will remain in Florida for the entire duration of the camp, rather than returning home when the rest of the squad arrives.
Among the five additional players, only Scott was included in Tuchel’s preliminary 55-man squad for the tournament. Consequently, he holds the best opportunity to earn a spot in the final World Cup squad should any injuries occur during the preparations. Given this prospect, the 22-year-old is considered a strong candidate to make his international debut in one of the upcoming friendlies before taking his summer break.
Scott previously received his first senior call-up for the November fixtures against Serbia and Albania but did not feature in any matches. He was subsequently omitted from the squad for the March games against Japan and Uruguay and ultimately left out of the final World Cup party.
Speaking on the decision to bring five extra players to the US, the England head coach highlighted Scott’s positive attitude. "I'm really happy these guys are with us, especially Alex," Tuchel stated. "He was in the list of 55 and had a kind of disappointing phone call as well, that he didn't make the first cut. But the reaction of him was outstanding. The commitment, the wish to be in pre-camp and to just be a step closer to the team was not even a question for him."
Tuchel added, "He showed me his character and his spirit so I'm delighted that he's with us because it was a close call."
