Universal park officially named as government pledges £1.3bn
Universal United Kingdom Resort Unveiled with £1.3bn Government Backing
Universal’s long-awaited British theme park has been officially christened the Universal United Kingdom Resort, a move accompanied by a substantial £1.3 billion commitment from the government. Comcast NBCUniversal projects that the facility, scheduled to open in 2031, will attract 8.5 million guests annually, with the ultimate goal of establishing itself as Europe’s leading theme park destination.
The American media conglomerate has pledged a £5 billion investment for the construction of the resort in Kempston Hardwick, Bedfordshire, with an additional £1 billion allocated for operational development over the first decade. The government’s financial support is specifically directed at enhancing local infrastructure and transport networks to manage the influx of domestic and international tourists.
Prior to the official announcement, Chancellor Rachel Reeves toured the site, where initial groundwork had already commenced. She highlighted the project's potential to "unlock nearly £50bn of economic growth" and generate thousands of employment opportunities.
"Our own investment in transport and infrastructure means that local people will benefit - improving connectivity, backing our creative industries, and bringing millions of visitors to the UK from across the world," Reeves stated.
A significant portion of the public funding will finance upgrades to Wixams station, transforming it into a four-platform hub, as well as improvements to the A421 road, estimated to cost £474 million. While Wixams is the nearest Thameslink stop to the resort, the East West Rail project is also expected to introduce a station at Stewartby in the early 2030s.
Employment prospects are a major component of the development. More than 100 individuals in the UK are currently working on the project, with Universal committing to creating 20,000 jobs throughout the construction phase. Once the park opens its doors, an additional 8,000 positions will be available, with the company aiming to fill approximately 80% of these roles with residents from Bedfordshire and neighboring regions.
Mark Woodbury, Chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations & Experiences, emphasized the local impact: "This new theme park and resort will create so many new opportunities for the people of Bedford and beyond and allow us to share our distinct experiences with guests from around the world."
Spanning 268 hectares, the site may feature Europe’s tallest roller coasters. The resort will comprise a year-round theme park, accessible until late evening, alongside a retail and entertainment district that requires no admission fee. Over the first two decades of operation, Comcast NBCUniversal aims to increase visitor numbers to 12 million per year, securing its place among the world’s most visited parks.
While specific attractions have not been confirmed, a source previously indicated to the BBC that themes could include James Bond, The Lord of the Rings, Paddington, and Jurassic World. A Universal spokesperson noted it was too early to verify these details. However, Woodbury assured that the park would deliver "immersive storytelling, thrilling attractions and unparalleled creativity and innovation to the UK."
Page Thompson, President of New Ventures at Universal Destinations & Experiences, previously revealed that this would be the only Universal park in Europe. He also confirmed that the company has acquired additional adjacent land, which may be developed in the future as part of a century-long strategic plan.
