These are the best airlines in 2026, according to The Points Guy

Title: The Points Guy’s 2026 Airline Rankings: Top Carriers Revealed

The latest annual survey from The Points Guy has unveiled the leading airlines for 2026, evaluating carriers based on a comprehensive set of criteria including cost, reliability, customer experience, and loyalty benefits. Delta Air Lines has secured the number one position among U.S. carriers, with United Airlines and Southwest Airlines completing the top three in the travel platform’s 2026 report.

In this tenth edition of its rankings, The Points Guy adjusted the scoring methodology to reflect current economic realities, placing greater emphasis on affordability. Citing financial pressures stemming from the war in Iran, the site increased the weight of the cost category to 25% of the total score, up from 20% in the previous year. This shift comes as rising jet fuel prices have forced multiple airlines to increase both ticket fares and baggage fees. Despite this adjustment, reliability remains the most heavily weighted factor, accounting for 30% of the final score. Loyalty programs also contribute 25%, while the overall travel experience makes up the remaining 20%.

The 2026 rankings list Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Alaska Air Group, American Airlines, JetBlue, Allegiant Air, and Frontier Airlines. Notably, the survey evaluated only eight carriers this year, a reduction from the ten airlines assessed in prior years. The Points Guy had initially intended to include Spirit Airlines, but removed the budget carrier after it ceased operations earlier this month.

Delta’s victory marks its eighth straight year at the top of The Points Guy’s list. Speaking with "CBS Mornings," Kelly attributed Delta’s sustained success to high employee satisfaction, which he argues directly enhances the passenger experience. To support this, Delta distributed $1.3 billion in profit sharing to its workforce this year, equivalent to approximately 8.9% of eligible annual earnings for its employees.

"So when you fly Delta, there is a marked difference in the happiness of their employees, which I believe is attributed to that profit sharing," Kelly explained. "And they're generally very reliable."

While United Airlines earned high marks for its loyalty program and frequent-flyer benefits, it was unable to overtake Delta due to issues with baggage handling. According to data from the Department of Transportation cited in the report, United had the highest rate of mishandled bags, a factor that Kelly noted prevented it from claiming the top spot.

Southwest Airlines managed to hold onto the third-place position despite eliminating its free checked bag policy last year. Kelly observed that Southwest maintains a competitive edge through operational efficiency and lower fees compared to most competitors. "Southwest still is, relatively, when you look at fees, lower than most other airlines," he said, adding that the carrier "run a tight operation."

When analyzing affordability, Frontier Airlines emerged as the clear leader, offering the most budget-friendly ticket prices. Spirit Airlines would have been a close contender had it remained in operation. Conversely, Delta and United were identified as the least affordable options in the survey.

To help travelers secure better deals, Kelly suggested utilizing artificial intelligence tools. He highlighted Autopilot, a service that monitors fare fluctuations and provides credits to customers if prices drop after booking. Other recommended platforms include Junova, PAiback, and JetBack. Additionally, Kelly noted that Google Flights can be effective for finding discounted fares to Europe, provided travelers are open to flexible dates and destinations.

"When you go to Google flights, you can put in your home airport on the explore map and put in Europe, the Caribbean, wherever you want to go," Kelly advised. "It'll show you a map of Europe and all the cheapest flights."
