Bondi Beach shooting hero charged with domestic assault
Ahmed al Ahmed, Bondi Beach Shooting Hero, Faces Domestic Violence Charges
Ahmed al Ahmed, the civilian credited with disarming one of the gunmen during the tragic Bondi Beach massacre, has been charged with domestic assault. The 44-year-old was widely celebrated as a hero for his actions during the December attack at a Hanukkah gathering, which resulted in the deaths of 15 people and injured dozens more.
According to Australian media reports, al Ahmed is accused of assaulting his father in March. He faces charges of common assault related to domestic violence, as well as counts of stalking and intimidation. Al Ahmed has firmly rejected these accusations, stating to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that the claims were “not true at all.”
The public’s reverence for al Ahmed stems from viral footage of the shooting, which captured him wrestling a weapon away from one of the alleged assailants. During the struggle, al Ahmed was shot multiple times. His bravery drew praise from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who visited him in the hospital and described him as the “best of our country.” A fundraising campaign organized to support his recovery successfully raised over A$2.5 million (£1.24m; $1.7m).
Al Ahmed is scheduled to appear in Sydney’s Bankstown Local Court on June 29. The Bondi Beach incident remains Australia’s deadliest mass shooting since 1996, and police have classified it as a terrorist attack specifically targeting the Jewish community.
