American Airlines suspends some LAX flights over fuel prices
American Airlines Halts Select LAX Departures Amid Soaring Fuel Costs
Amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, coupled with surging energy costs, American Airlines has announced the temporary suspension of several popular nonstop routes departing from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). According to KTLA, the local NewsNation affiliate, the carrier will pause direct service to Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and Washington Dulles from August 5 through October 4. Additionally, the airline is halting nonstop connections between Charlotte and both Ontario and Sacramento during this period.
The strategic adjustment follows reports from Reuters indicating that American Airlines projects its jet fuel expenses will exceed $4 billion for the current year. While direct flights are suspended, the airline assured passengers that travel to these destinations remains possible via connecting flights.
The timing of these cuts coincides with ongoing diplomatic efforts between the U.S. and Iran to negotiate an end to the conflict, even as the strategic Strait of Hormuz remains largely obstructed. On Wednesday, President Donald Trump suggested to reporters that a resolution could be reached “over the weekend,” provided negotiations progress favorably.
In a statement provided to KTLA, American Airlines clarified that the reductions are part of a seasonal adjustment to service levels in August and September. The carrier emphasized that these changes are aimed at refining capacity growth for 2026 and do not represent permanent route cancellations.
“American is not suspending any routes indefinitely as part of this adjustment and will continue to proudly offer an industry-leading network with more flights than any other U.S. airline,” the statement read. The airline further noted that affected travelers will be provided with alternative travel options or refunds, consistent with its customer-friendly schedule change policy.
