Singer duets with pre-transition self

Musician Bridges Past and Present in Emotional Duet with Pre-Transition Recordings

Dylan Holloway, known professionally as Dylan and the Moon and a former finalist on The X Factor, has released a series of videos featuring a unique musical collaboration with his former self. In these clips, the singer layers his current vocals over recordings made before his transition from female to male, crafting what he describes as a dialogue between his past and present identities. The content has garnered significant attention on social media, with viewers commending the emotional depth of the tracks and their powerful message regarding self-acceptance.

Holloway, who hails from Tunbridge Wells in Kent, credited his mother for encouraging him to preserve his old recordings rather than discarding them. "I wanted to just move on, however my lovely mum suggested that I don't delete my stuff just yet because you never know how time heals you," he explained. This advice enabled Holloway to revisit his history with renewed empathy, noting that he can now look back "with such love and compassion and gratitude for bringing me to be the person I am now."

The musician highlighted that within the transgender community, there is often an implicit pressure to disown one’s former identity to validate the transition to others. "You have to prove you hated your former life to make it more palatable for the people around you," he said. Rejecting this narrative, Holloway stated his desire to "celebrate the whole self." He recalled that his upbringing was marked by difficulty and suppression, describing the lack of understanding as "incredibly painful." He shared that he endured isolation during his childhood and teenage years, labeling puberty as "the worst time of my life." These feelings of loneliness and existential questioning later fueled his work as a mental health advocate.

Before transitioning, Holloway first gained fame as Lots Holloway, a member of the urban group MK1 during the 2012 series of The X Factor, where the band reached the live finals. Speaking to BBC Radio Kent, he recalled the experience as "crazy," though he noted a disconnect between his public image and internal reality: "The nation knew me as this girl in this urban band when a lot of that wasn't how I felt inside." He paused his career under that persona before transitioning in 2020 and beginning hormone therapy in 2021.

Holloway acknowledged that his medical journey, which included surgery, carried significant professional stakes. "My voice was a fundamental part of my career so it was a really big risk," he admitted, though he described the physical changes as both thrilling and risky. He expressed excitement about the transformation, saying he felt "so excited to run to the mirror and see what was happening."

Since his transition, Holloway has achieved notable milestones, becoming the first transgender winner of the BBC music competition Project Icon. He has since shared the stage with prominent artists such as The 1975 and Lewis Capaldi. Beyond his musical career, he serves as a mental health ambassador and speaker, advocating for authenticity and the embrace of change. His recent duet videos serve to reassure audiences that "you don't have to reject who you were to become who you are," emphasizing that individuals are "allowed to evolve and change and embrace the whole story, their whole selves."
