Artemis II: Nasa targets early April for Moon mission

Artemis II: NASA Aims for Early April Launch for Lunar Flyby

NASA has indicated that it is on schedule to launch the Artemis II mission in early April, a historic endeavor that will send astronauts around the Moon for the first time in over five decades. Although the initial launch window was set for March, the mission faced a delay after a helium leak was detected in the rocket. Consequently, the vehicle was returned to the Vehicle Assembly Building in Cape Canaveral, Florida, for necessary repairs.

Agency officials have expressed confidence that the issue has been resolved. NASA plans to return the rocket to the launchpad on March 19, establishing April 1 as the earliest potential launch date. During a press briefing, NASA leadership highlighted the inherent risks of the upcoming flight. The Artemis II crew consists of three American astronauts—Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch—alongside Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. They will become the first humans to ride the Space Launch System, NASA’s powerful lunar rocket, and the Orion spacecraft.

Over the ten-day mission, the crew is scheduled to travel around the Moon’s far side, the hemisphere never visible from Earth, before returning to home.

“We want to be sure that we're thinking about everything that can possibly go wrong, and have we assessed and adjudicated all the risks to put us in the best posture to be successful,” stated John Honeycutt, chair of the Artemis II Mission Management Team. He noted that historical data on new rocket development suggests a 50% success rate, but he believes NASA’s current position is stronger. “We do an outstanding job of understanding the risk, buying down the risk, mitigating the risk, and putting together controls to manage the risk,” he added.

NASA confirmed that it will not perform another “wet dress rehearsal” once the rocket is moved to the pad. This pre-launch procedure involves filling the rocket with fuel and running through the countdown sequence. Lori Glaze, acting associate administrator for the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate, explained, “There's not a lot more to be gained from that. The next time we tank the vehicle will be when we're attempting to launch.”

Despite the April 1 target, Glaze cautioned that further work remains. “I am comfortable and the agency is comfortable with targeting April 1 as our first opportunity, just keep in mind we still have work to go,” she said. “There are still things that need to be done within the Vehicle Assembly Building and out at the pad, and as always, we'll always be guided by what the hardware is telling us, and we will launch when we're ready.”

The agency faces significant pressure to execute the Artemis II launch. The mission was already postponed by two years following issues with the heat shield on the uncrewed Artemis I flight, which tested the Space Launch System and Orion capsule without astronauts. In December 2024, NASA established a deadline to launch Artemis II no later than the end of April 2026. “At this point, we're very focused on April,” Glaze concluded.
