Flintoff named Sydney Thunder men's head coach
Flintoff Appointed as Head Coach of Sydney Thunder Men’s Team
Legendary former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has been appointed as the head coach of the Sydney Thunder men’s team in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), marking his debut in an overseas T20 franchise.
The 48-year-old, who has served as the full-time coach for the England Lions since 2024, will depart early from their ongoing tour of South Africa to assume the position. While the specific BBL schedule has not yet been released, the England Lions squad is scheduled to remain in South Africa for a four-day match commencing on December 18. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has granted Flintoff permission to make the move, viewing the appointment as a valuable opportunity for his coaching development.
Flintoff has secured a two-year contract with the Thunder, succeeding former England coach Trevor Bayliss in the role. Expressing his enthusiasm, Flintoff stated, “I can't wait to get over there and get started.” He added, “I'm looking at this with a lot of optimism. You look at the franchise, you look at the players, you look at the support, and I think there's something really big to build on.”
Under the captaincy of former Australian opener David Warner, the Thunder reached the finals of the BBL last year, ultimately finishing as runners-up. Flintoff brings extensive experience to the role, having previously coached the Northern Superchargers men’s team in The Hundred for two seasons. During his tenure, he guided the Leeds-based side to fourth and third-place finishes before the franchise was acquired by the Sunrisers group, leading to his non-retention for the 2026 season.
Trent Copeland, the Thunder’s general manager, hailed the appointment as a significant milestone. “This is a huge day in the history of Sydney Thunder, and the BBL more broadly,” Copeland said. “Fred brings something truly unique to Sydney Thunder. He's a global icon of the game, but more importantly he is a modern leader who understands how to build high-performance environments, connect with players as people, and set standards that last.”
Copeland noted that Flintoff’s “passion for the game, coaching itself and knowledge of Australian cricket and our Thunder program stood out during the process.”
