From non-league to Premier League... Coventry's 'unreal' pair
From Non-League Roots to Premier League Glory: Coventry’s ‘Unreal’ Duo
Ephron Mason-Clark demonstrates exceptional first-ball control, settling the sphere before finishing clinically from close quarters. Just sixteen minutes later, Brandon Thomas-Asante directs a precise header past the goalkeeper from six yards out, celebrating with characteristic flair. However, this scene does not depict two of Coventry City’s leading strikers netting in a 2025-26 Championship fixture en route to promotion. Instead, it recalls a specific day in March 2019, when these two young talents were scoring in non-league football.
On that afternoon, with only 500 fans in attendance, a 20-year-old Thomas-Asante found the net for Oxford City during a 5-3 National League South defeat to Hampton & Richmond Borough. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Mason-Clark scored for Barnet in a National League match against Gateshead, a 2-1 loss witnessed by just over 650 spectators.
Seven years later, the trajectory of both players has shifted dramatically. Together, they contributed 36 goals in the Championship, instrumental in sending the Sky Blues back to the top flight for the first time in a quarter-century. Thomas-Asante’s rise was further cemented by his selection for Ghana’s World Cup squad.
Reflecting on the triumph, Thomas-Asante told BBC CWR after Coventry secured the Championship title with a 3-1 victory over Wrexham in the penultimate round: "Wow, what a moment. Moments like this aren't random; they are the result of years and decades of buildup. It is a journey."
The 27-year-old’s path to the Premier League spanned ten senior seasons. Beginning at the MK Dons academy in 2011, he broke into their first team in League One in 2016. His career subsequently took him through Sutton United, Ebbsfleet United, and Oxford City in the National League, alongside a stint with Salford City in League Two. Signing for West Bromwich Albion in the summer of 2022, he completed the set of having played in all three EFL divisions. Two years after joining Coventry, he is now poised to add the highest tier of English football to his resume.
For 26-year-old Mason-Clark, his professional journey began in the seventh tier in 2016 with a short loan to Metropolitan Police in the Isthmian League Premier Division, shortly after his Barnet debut in League Two. He spent six years at Barnet, mostly in the National League, before moving to Peterborough United in League One in 2022 and finally to Coventry in 2024.
The pair share a unique bond forged in the lower divisions. "We have a running joke," Thomas-Asante explained. "We say we have our jumpers at home. Anyone who has played in the National League knows that everyone wears the same jacket before a match."
Thomas-Asante retained one of these jackets as a reminder of the difficult periods, while also emphasizing the quality of that level. "I don't want to downplay the National League because, as we have seen with clubs like York and Rochdale, the standard is unreal. It is often underestimated and treated as a joke, but it is not. Seeing League Two, League One, the Championship, and hopefully soon the Premier League, is truly special."
It proved fitting that both players scored in Coventry’s final home game of the season, having also assisted each other for the opening goal in that victory. Thomas-Asante praised his teammate’s development: "I am a fan of football before I am a player, and the player he has become is just unreal. Even watching from the other side of the pitch, I had to remind myself to get into the back post. He constantly improves his game; he is becoming inevitable. No one can really stop him."
EFL specialist George Elek highlighted Mason-Clark’s impact, calling him "one of the unsung heroes of the Championship this season" on the Not The Top 20 podcast. "He brings immense quality from the left flank," Elek noted. "He is another example of a player Coventry sign..."
