Galbraith 'all good' with injury after Matos concern
Galbraith Confident After Injury Scare Amidst Matos Debates
Swansea City midfielder Ethan Galbraith has confirmed he is fully fit to join the Northern Ireland squad for their upcoming friendly matches against Guinea and France, dispelling earlier concerns regarding his physical condition. The 24-year-old had been sidelined since the international friendly draw against Wales in late March, a period that followed Northern Ireland’s World Cup play-off loss to Italy.
Prior to the June international break, Swansea manager Vitor Matos had expressed a preference for Galbraith to rest during the window. However, Galbraith revealed that he had engaged in discussions with both Matos and the club’s medical staff. Having missed the rest of Swansea’s Championship season, Galbraith noted that the medical team had given him the green light to travel with the national side.
Northern Ireland is scheduled to face Guinea in Spain on Thursday at 17:00 BST, followed by a World Cup send-off match against France in Lille on June 8.
"I'm happy to be able to come to camp," Galbraith stated. "I spent six or seven weeks just with a physio, so that was quite long just training by myself, but it is all good now."
Acknowledging the frustration of being off the pitch, he added, "Having these games is absolutely brilliant for everyone, but coming off the back of an injury, it'll be good to get back out there."
Following a standout first season at Swansea, where he has featured as both a right-back and in midfield, Galbraith has attracted attention from Premier League clubs and Championship competitors like Wrexham. Despite the speculation, he remains committed to his current team.
"It's nice when you see people are saying that you are doing good things, but at the moment I'm a Swansea player and will just try and focus on Swansea," he said.
O'Neill Secures Future
In related news, Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill has committed his future to the national team by signing a contract extension until 2032. This decision comes despite interest from Blackburn Rovers, where O'Neill had been balancing his international duties with the club’s Championship survival efforts during the second half of the season. Although Blackburn offered him the permanent role, O'Neill has chosen to stay with Northern Ireland.
Galbraith, echoing the sentiments of teammate Isaac Price, expressed his delight at O'Neill’s continued leadership. "Price 'buzzing' after O'Neill opts to stay with NI," highlighted the positive reaction to the news.
"He's been massive for me in my career," Galbraith explained. "He's been massive for a lot of the lads in such a young group. He lets us play in big games and lets us play with freedom. He's been brilliant for me."
Welcoming the New Generation
O'Neill’s latest squad includes two uncapped teenagers: Everton’s Braiden Graham and Arsenal’s Ceadach O'Neill. Both prospects developed at Linfield in the Irish Premiership before moving to English football. Galbraith, having navigated a similar path, said he is there to help them settle.
"I'm there to make them feel welcome in the squad," he said. "Just take it in your stride. Don't try and do too much different from what you have been doing, because that is what has got them here. I've been around for a while and it's always nice to welcome them in. If they need anything, just let them know that they can ask. We've all been in that situation once upon a time."
