'People don't value me here' - Nienaber unsure on Leinster future

Nienaber Questions Leinster Longevity Amidst Claims of Media and Fan Disrespect

Jacques Nienaber has thrown his future at Leinster into doubt, stating that he does not feel appreciated by Irish supporters and the press. The South African arrived at the province at the close of 2023, bringing with him the experience of guiding his national team to consecutive Rugby World Cup victories.

Although Nienaber, who collaborates closely with head coach Leo Cullen, played a pivotal role in securing the United Rugby Championship (URC) title last season by implementing the aggressive "blitz" defensive strategy he utilized with the Springboks, the club has yet to capture a fifth European Champions Cup trophy under his tenure.

Ahead of Leinster’s URC semi-final clash with the Stormers on Saturday (17:30 BST), the 53-year-old, whose contract runs through the 2026-27 season, addressed rumors regarding his continuation in the role. When questioned about his status for the upcoming campaign, Nienaber offered a stark perspective on the nature of job security in professional sports.

"Let me put it to you this way: who fires you? Do you know who fires you? The public, the media. They fire you. Not the CEO, not Shane [Nolan]," Nienaber told RTE. "He doesn't fire me, but you guys fire us. You fire all coaches, because the pressure builds up and builds up, and the fan then builds the pressure on them, and then they just ask this and say, 'listen lads, I think we must part ways'."

Addressing the specific question of his own retention, Nienaber admitted uncertainty. "Your question is, am I going to be here? I hope so. Currently, I'm not sure, to be honest, because people don't value me here. They don't."

When asked if Cullen recognizes his worth, Nienaber replied, "It's not for Leo [to value me]. People don't value...the moment you lose the team or the fan, you've got to go. The moment you lose the changing room or the club, the fanbase, you've got to go."

He emphasized that staying solely for financial gain is not an option. "You could just hang there and take your cheque, but no. They don't want you there."

These comments follow Leinster’s heavy defeat in the Champions Cup final on May 23, where Bordeaux-Begles secured a 41-19 victory in Bilbao with five first-half tries, successfully defending their title. This marked Leinster’s fourth loss in their last five finals. In the aftermath of that result, Cullen announced that the club would conduct a comprehensive operational review during the summer.

Despite the criticism, Nienaber insisted he remains dedicated to the club’s needs. "I will always serve the club," he said. "The moment you are not serving the club, your ego is done."

Nienaber also defended his tactical flexibility, noting that he is not wedded exclusively to one defensive style. "It's not the case that I don't understand the other system, I understand it, but both systems…there's not one that's better than the other." He pointed to his previous success with the Stormers, where he coached the drift defense in Super Rugby, adding, "Before I went to Munster I coached the drift defence at the Stormers and we were pretty good at it, have a look. We didn't concede too many tries in Super Rugby."

This incident marks the second time this season that Nienaber has had a tense interaction with the press. In December, he felt compelled to clarify remarks he made in an interview with South African broadcaster SuperSport regarding his time at Leinster. Similarly, Cullen has recently expressed frustration with media coverage, last month noting that the press "love throwing the boot in" at the Irish province, and just last weekend responding sharply to online critics following a dominant URC quarter-final victory over the Lions.
