Chelsea legend Tambling dies aged 84
Chelsea Icon Bobby Tambling Passes Away at 84
Bobby Tambling, the former Chelsea record goalscorer and club legend, has died at the age of 84.
During his tenure with the club from 1959 to 1970, Tambling netted 202 goals in 370 appearances. This longstanding record stood until Frank Lampard surpassed it in May 2013.
Tambling made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut at just 17 years old. He played a pivotal role in Chelsea’s 1965 League Cup victory, finding the back of the net against Leicester in the final. Although he also scored in the 1967 FA Cup final, the Blues were defeated by Tottenham.
Before leaving for Crystal Palace in 1970, Tambling earned three caps for the England national team. He concluded his playing career in the Republic of Ireland, eventually settling in Cork. There, he took on managerial roles with local clubs Cork Celtic, Cork City, and Crosshaven.
In his later years, Tambling lived with dementia. A tribute posted on Crosshaven’s X account honored him as "a true Chelsea legend and an even more wonderful human being."
"His warmth, his wisdom, his humour and his love will stay with us forever," the statement continued. It noted that Tambling cherished his visits back to Stamford Bridge, where he was deeply admired. "Seeing his 'Tambling 202' banner proudly displayed and having a suite named in his honour always filled him with quiet pride."
