'I need to put myself first' - McCabe on Chelsea move
"I Need to Prioritize Myself": McCabe Explains Chelsea Switch
Republic of Ireland captain Katie McCabe has stated that she felt compelled to "put myself first" as she discussed her transfer from Arsenal to Chelsea. The Blues officially announced the acquisition of the 30-year-old defender on Monday, securing her services on a contract running until June 2029, with a mutual option to extend for one additional year.
McCabe’s decision to join the West London club came after she turned down a final contract proposal from Arsenal in April. Although she spent 11 years at the Gunners—securing a Women’s Super League championship in 2019 and a Women’s Champions League victory in 2025—the left-back felt it was time to seek a fresh challenge, even amidst backlash from some supporters.
"I empathize deeply with Arsenal supporters right now; it is never easy watching a player who has dedicated such a long period to a club join a direct rival," McCabe remarked. "However, I also had to prioritize my own needs. This move represented the best scenario for me. While I am aware that I am 30, I believe I am currently at a peak in my career. I feel I still have much to offer."
She added, "Chelsea has enjoyed significant success in recent years, and I am eager to keep competing at the highest level, win trophies, and contribute to something truly exceptional."
McCabe provided these comments while training with the Republic of Ireland squad. Carla Ward’s team is preparing for their final two World Cup qualifiers against the Netherlands and France. The Irish skipper expressed relief that her future was resolved before joining camp, allowing her to concentrate fully on the matches. Both games are critical for Ireland, as a victory is required for automatic qualification for the tournament in Brazil next year.
"It was no secret that I was entering the final year of my contract, so discussions naturally began in January. Over the past few weeks and months, everything was finalized," McCabe explained.
The Dublin-born player looked back warmly on her tenure at Arsenal, having joined from Raheny United in 2015, while also sharing her enthusiasm for her new role at Chelsea, who are targeting a return to the WSL throne from Manchester City in the upcoming season.
"Dedicating 10 or 11 years to a single football club is a truly special experience, and doing so at a institution like Arsenal was amazing," she said. "I grew up there, gaining immense knowledge both as an athlete and as an individual. I hold everyone there, including my teammates, in high regard."
Acknowledging the emotional difficulty of the past few months, she concluded, "But now is the right moment for a new chapter. After speaking with Sonia [Bompastor], I grasped her vision and the project she is building at Chelsea, and I wanted to be part of it."
