Man Utd Firm on Transfer Strategy Despite Market Pressures, Says Berrada

Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada has insisted that the club remains committed to its strategic transfer approach, emphasizing the necessity of avoiding inflated prices in this summer's market. This stance comes as United seeks to consolidate its position after a period characterized by significant expenditure on high-profile acquisitions such as Casemiro, Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Donny van de Beek.

The club’s leadership believes its previous methodology—characterized by a greater reliance on data analytics—proved successful approximately 12 months ago. This strategy yielded immediate returns with the swift acquisitions of Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford early in the window, followed by the signings of striker Benjamin Sesko and goalkeeper Senne Lammens toward the end of the period. The contributions of these four players were instrumental in helping United secure third place in the Premier League and regain Champions League qualification for the first time in three years.

Speaking on the club’s Inside Carrington podcast, Berrada outlined the blueprint they intend to follow. "The template for what we did last summer will be replicated," he stated. "You never know how you will come out of a window. You have to be really prepared, you have to have a clear plan, you have to know what positions you want to strengthen and you also have to be prepared for any eventuality."

Berrada highlighted the need for adaptability, noting that unexpected player exits or shifting opportunities may arise. "We have to be agile and flexible," he added. "We have a clear plan. [Director of football] Jason Wilcox and his team are well set up to execute that plan. What we saw last season is a good way forward for us."

The recruitment philosophy prioritizes a blend of seasoned professionals and emerging talent. "We want a mix of experience and youth," Berrada explained. "A mix of players who have demonstrated they can perform in the Premier League and players that are doing very well outside the Premier League." He further stressed that all decisions are made with a long-term perspective rather than short-term gains. "Whatever decisions we take will not just be for the short term but the long term."

In line with this disciplined approach, United have agreed to a £35 million fee with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson. The 26-year-old is expected to undergo a medical shortly before pre-season training begins early next month. However, the club is not limiting its activity to a single signing. United are actively pursuing at least one, and possibly two, additional central midfielders. They maintain a strong interest in West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, who carries an £80 million price tag.

Additionally, the recruitment team is seeking a striker to provide depth behind Sesko and a left-sided defender. Head coach Michael Carrick is reportedly considering a player who can challenge Luke Shaw, potentially favoring a profile similar to Patrick Dorgu, whom Carrick views as more attacking-minded.

The transfer operation will involve key figures including Wilcox, director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, director of negotiations Matt Hargreaves, and Berrada himself. A central tenet of their strategy is strict financial discipline. Club sources have emphasized that they will not overpay for targets, a principle that reportedly led them to withdraw from a potential ÂŁ120 million bid for Nottingham Forest and England international Elliot Anderson.

"We have to be really disciplined. We have a plan, we know what we can invest and we need to stick to it," Berrada said. He clarified that while some investments may yield returns over a decade rather than just a few years, the club must remain focused on its objectives. "It's very important you don't let the market or the agents dictate what we should be doing."
