A phenomenon of AI-conformity: how algorithms change human moral decision-making

Title: The Rise of AI Conformity: How Algorithms Reshape Human Moral Judgment

Abstract

Social conformity is a widely recognized phenomenon where individuals adjust their views to align with the majority. As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more deeply embedded in daily life, it introduces a new form of influence known as "algorithmic conformity," though the mechanisms driving this behavior remain largely unexplored. This study investigates whether AI judgments influence human moral decision-making, utilizing a modified version of the classic Asch paradigm with 165 participants.

The experiment involved participants solving moral dilemmas under three distinct scenarios: facing a social majority, receiving brief answers from an AI model, and receiving both answers and explanatory reasoning from an AI. In every condition, the provided responses contradicted established moral norms. The data revealed that an AI model capable of providing reasoning influenced participants’ opinions to a similar extent as a human majority.

These results indicate that even moral judgments, which are typically sensitive and personally significant, are vulnerable to algorithmic conformity. However, the process behind this conformity appears distinct from social conformity. Ultimately, the study questions the notion that moral decision-making resides in an "AI inadmissibility zone"—a domain presumed to be exclusively reserved for human judgment. It underscores the necessity for further research as AI-driven recommendations become increasingly integral to human decision-making processes.
