CEON: Circular Economy Ontology Network
Title: CEON: Circular Economy Ontology Network
Abstract:
Transitioning toward a more circular economy is widely acknowledged as a vital route to sustainability, aiming to enhance the circularity of resource utilization within society. This shift relies on various circular strategies, including the reuse of products and components, the refurbishment and remanufacturing of used items, and the recycling of residual or spent materials. Facilitating these strategies requires robust infrastructure-level information sharing and effective communication across industry sectors throughout the product life cycle. Consequently, achieving semantic interoperability in this exchange of information is essential for boosting circularity.
Despite its importance, representing knowledge within the circular economy (CE) domain remains difficult due to the involvement of numerous industry sectors linked to product lifecycles. To address this challenge, we have created the Circular Economy Ontology Network (CEON) as part of the Onto-DESIDE project. CEON seeks to close existing gaps in CE by establishing cross-sectorial concepts and facilitating semantics-aware data documentation. We illustrate the utility of CEON through data documentation scenarios that cut across the construction, electronics, and textile industries.
