Empathic and agentic artificial intelligence in nursing: perspectives on a human-centered framework for cancer care navigation in the United States
Title: Empathic and Agentic Artificial Intelligence in Nursing: Perspectives on a Human-Centered Framework for Cancer Care Navigation in the United States
Abstract: Cancer patients often face significant challenges due to the complexity of their treatment regimens, but nurse navigation can alleviate this burden by improving health service coordination and enhancing patient outcomes. Nevertheless, in regions with limited resources, access to qualified nurse navigators is often scarce or entirely unavailable. While artificial intelligence (AI)-powered digital health solutions are becoming more widespread in the United States and offer potential solutions for care coordination gaps, the majority of these tools are not specifically tailored to support nursing practices. This perspective article outlines a human-centered AI framework that incorporates empathic and agentic principles derived from the American Nurses Association’s code of ethics. Designed to assist nurses in the U.S. with cancer care navigation, this framework aims to enhance workflow efficiency, strengthen patient-clinician relationships, and improve care coordination in under-served areas. Crucially, it is intended to augment, rather than substitute, human empathy and agency.
