Tackling the Root of Misinformation by Teaching Laypeople about Logical Fallacies via Socratic Questioning and Critical Argumentation
Title: Combating the Source of Misinformation: Educating the Public on Logical Fallacies Through Socratic Inquiry and Critical Argumentation
Abstract:
Detecting logical fallacies in daily conversation remains a difficult task for the general public. This difficulty is exacerbated by the rise of Large Language Models (LLMs), which enable bad actors to spread misinformation widely using flawed reasoning. This study investigates how LLMs can instead serve as part of the remedy. We present LFTutor, an intelligent tutoring platform that leverages LLMs to teach non-experts about logical fallacies. By incorporating critical argumentation techniques and intent-driven Socratic questioning, LFTutor encourages students to actively examine their own thought processes. Evaluations conducted by both humans and automated systems show that LFTutor substantially surpasses baseline LLMs that do not utilize these educational methods. Our findings underscore the potential of merging LLMs with structured pedagogical support to enhance critical thinking and argumentative literacy in the AI era.
