A startup, Everand, is now bundling e-books, audiobooks, and book clubs in challenge to Amazon

Title: Everand Challenges Amazon’s Digital Reading Dominance with New Bundled Subscription

The dilemma of choosing between audiobooks and e-books is now obsolete. Scribd-owned service Everand has unveiled a unified subscription plan that merges its vast library of digital titles with the social reading platform Fable, which it acquired in 2025. Launched on Tuesday, this new offering directly contests Amazon’s stronghold on digital reading by combining access to over 1.5 million audiobooks and e-books with Fable’s network of nearly 200,000 online book clubs.

The service is immediately available to the combined user base of five million readers across both platforms. A key feature of this integration is synchronization; activity within one app mirrors the other, ensuring a seamless experience. The pricing structure in the U.S. includes an entry-level tier at $11.99 monthly for one title, a mid-tier option at $16.99 for three titles, and a premium plan at $28.99 for five titles. Everand positions this as a competitive alternative to Amazon’s Audible Premium Plus, which costs $14.95 per month for a single audiobook credit alongside a streaming catalog of podcasts and originals.

Everand’s strategy aims to chip away at Amazon’s expansive ecosystem, which includes Audible, Kindle, and the widely used Goodreads app. By leveraging the acquisition of Fable, the company is employing a classic retention tactic: creating high switching costs and deepening engagement through community features. The merger allows Fable’s extensive database of more than 100 million ratings and reviews to be integrated into Everand, while enabling Everand users to join discussion groups centered on the books they are currently consuming. Highlighting the popularity of this social aspect, the company reported that 820,000 Fable users joined new clubs last year.

Under the new subscription, users receive Fable Plus, which grants access to advanced analytics, personalized reading goals, and an advertisement-free interface. This move comes as Everand faces increased competition in the sector. Spotify has recently entered the audiobook space and introduced physical books, utilizing a “page match” feature to synchronize reading progress between print and audio formats.

Everand’s leadership believes the bundled model will appeal to consumers seeking convenience, citing a 2025 survey of over 1,600 U.S. adults that revealed more than half of readers regularly engage with both audio and text formats. The timing also aligns with broader cultural trends; driven by BookTok and a Gen Z interest in “analog” activities, readers are increasingly seeking community interaction. They desire platforms that facilitate discussion, rating, and sharing of favorite passages, needs that Fable addresses with tools like reading trackers, streak counters, and dedicated discussion rooms.

The market for reading companion apps is already crowded, with competitors including Hardcover, Storygraph, Margins, PageBound, Bookshelf, Bookly, TBR, Reading Journey, and Bookwise. This saturation recently forced Tome to announce its shutdown. Beyond the U.S. market, Everand is rolling out its Standard, Plus, and Deluxe tiers globally. Additionally, the company has revised its credit system, permitting unused credits to roll over for up to six months rather than expiring at the end of each billing cycle.
