Martin Scorsese becomes the latest — and most unlikely — Hollywood voice for AI
Martin Scorsese Emerges as an Unlikely Hollywood Advocate for Artificial Intelligence
Martin Scorsese has officially joined forces with Black Forest Labs, an artificial intelligence image-generation startup, serving as both a partner and adviser, according to a report by The New York Times published on Tuesday. However, the legendary director clarified that his engagement with the technology is strictly limited to the storyboarding process. “For 70 years, I’ve been creating my own storyboards,” Scorsese stated in a comment to the newspaper. He explained that the AI tool enables him to convey his creative vision to production designers and cinematographers with significantly greater speed and efficiency.
Based in Freiburg, Germany—a location chosen to reflect its proximity to the actual Black Forest—the 70-employee company operates far from the traditional tech hubs of San Francisco. Despite its European headquarters, the firm’s technology underpins image-generation features for major industry players including Adobe, Canva, Meta, and Microsoft. Backed by investors such as BroadLight Capital, which was co-founded by Scorsese’s talent manager Rick Yorn, Black Forest Labs holds a valuation of $3.25 billion.
The startup was established by the creators of Stable Diffusion. According to Wired, the company recently turned down a partnership opportunity with Elon Musk’s xAI, following the conclusion of a prior collaboration on Grok’s image generator that had been halted due to worries regarding content safety measures.
While the restricted nature of Scorsese’s involvement may mitigate some fears, the development is likely to raise eyebrows within the entertainment sector. Nevertheless, it represents the latest indication that Hollywood’s historically strong opposition to artificial intelligence is gradually diminishing.
