Title: Do Readers Favor AI-Produced Italian Short Stories?

Abstract: This research examines whether readers demonstrate a preference for AI-generated short stories in Italian compared to works authored by a distinguished Italian writer. In a double-blind experiment, twenty participants assessed three narratives—two generated by ChatGPT-4o and one by Alberto Moravia—without knowing their origins. To identify potential confounding variables, the study also gathered data on reading habits and demographics, including age, gender, educational background, and native language. The outcomes indicated that AI-generated texts achieved marginally higher average ratings and were chosen more often, though the disparity was slight. Furthermore, the analysis revealed no statistically significant links between text preference and either demographic characteristics or reading behaviors. These results cast doubt on prevailing beliefs regarding reader loyalty to human-written fiction and prompt reconsideration of the need for editorial oversight of synthetic texts within literary domains.
