Stumbling Into AI Emotional Dependence: How Routine AI Interactions Reshape Human Connection

Title: Accidental Intimacy: How Everyday AI Interactions Redefine Human Bonds

Abstract

Conventional narratives and nascent regulations often characterize AI-driven emotional support as an intentional pursuit, envisioning a solitary individual actively turning to a specialized companion bot for solace. However, this paper challenges that assumption, arguing that the origin and behavioral impact of AI emotional support are fundamentally misunderstood. We posit that this traditional view fails to capture two critical realities: the incidental nature of these interactions and their long-term consequences on human behavior.

First, emotional support from AI frequently arises unintentionally within the context of task-focused exchanges on broad-spectrum platforms, mirroring how workplace camaraderie often develops organically through shared professional efforts. Second, these unplanned encounters create a path-dependent dynamic. Positive experiences with AI reshape users’ perceptions of the technology’s emotional intelligence, subsequently altering their future preferences for support. This shift leads to a growing reliance on AI and a diminishing inclination to seek comfort from human beings.

To illustrate this phenomenon, we examine recent empirical data, including findings from a large-scale longitudinal study conducted in partnership with OpenAI. The research reveals that engaging in brief, five-minute daily conversations with an AI about personal matters over a 28-day period resulted in a 10.3% decline in the preference for human support and an 11.6% rise in the preference for AI assistance.

These results indicate that current regulatory frameworks, which primarily target dedicated companion applications and discrete interactions, are insufficient to protect the integrity of human connection. Effective policy must instead encompass general-purpose AI systems and account for the cumulative, trajectory-level shifts in how individuals seek emotional aid. Understanding the mechanism by which people inadvertently become dependent on AI for emotional support—and how these interactions gradually redirect human relationships—is crucial for preserving overall well-being.
