Airbnb’s Brian Chesky plans to launch a new AI lab

Airbnb’s Brian Chesky to Establish Independent AI Laboratory

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky is transitioning from a supporter of artificial intelligence startups to a direct competitor in the field, with plans to found his own AI research laboratory. This development, first reported by Bloomberg and subsequently verified by TechCrunch through a source with knowledge of the matter, highlights a growing sentiment among Silicon Valley leaders who find the current outputs of major frontier AI labs insufficient.

Although Airbnb has integrated AI-powered coding tools into its operations, Chesky noted last year that the company had not entered into a partnership for large language models (LLMs) because existing solutions lacked the necessary maturity. However, Chesky possesses deep industry experience, having been introduced to OpenAI’s Sam Altman in 2006 via Y Combinator, the accelerator that helped launch Airbnb. The two maintained a close relationship, and as OpenAI experienced rapid growth, Chesky began holding regular consultations with Altman, providing guidance on scaling a high-growth technology firm.

Chesky, who was previously rumored to be a candidate for the OpenAI board, played a pivotal role in orchestrating Altman’s reinstatement as CEO following the board’s controversial dismissal of him due to transparency issues. Chesky managed public relations strategy for Altman and mobilized support among prominent figures in the tech industry. Now, however, he is positioning himself against the company he once helped guide.

The specific objectives of Chesky’s new venture remain undefined, though Bloomberg suggests a focus on user interaction and design—areas central to Airbnb’s brand identity. This approach mirrors the strategy of Brett Adcock, who launched Hark late last year to create a unique interface for AI assistants, although Hark is also pursuing hardware initiatives.

Despite launching a new AI entity, Chesky will not step into an executive leadership role for the lab. A source indicated that he will continue serving as Airbnb’s CEO and will not manage the new operation directly. The individual appointed to lead the lab will face significant challenges, including competition from established AI firms and oversight from a founder reportedly known for micromanagement. Representatives for both Airbnb and Chesky declined to provide further comment.
