Tragic Discovery: Body Recovered Following Search for Missing 11-Year-Old Boy

Authorities in South Yorkshire have recovered a body following a widespread search operation for 11-year-old Mackenzie Swift, who disappeared after entering the River Don. The child was last seen entering the water near Ferry Boat Lane in Mexborough at approximately 20:00 BST on Saturday.

The intensive search effort, which concluded shortly before 23:00 on Monday, involved multiple specialized teams. South Yorkshire Police confirmed the participation of an underwater recovery unit and volunteers from Mountain Rescue.

While formal identification procedures are still pending, a police spokesperson stated that Mackenzie’s family has been notified and has been provided with specialist support services.

This incident marks the 16th known death in the UK where individuals have lost their lives after entering open water during the recent period of hot weather.

Ch Supt Pete Thorp, the district commander for Doncaster, acknowledged the local community’s assistance and extended his condolences to those impacted by the tragedy. He emphasized the profound grief associated with the loss, stating, "First and foremost, on behalf of all who have been involved in the operation to find Mackenzie since Saturday, I send deepest sympathies to his family and friends."

Thorp added, "Losing a child is every parent's worst nightmare and I know the impact this news will have on the wider community and particularly Mackenzie's school."
