Tragedy in the Dales: 13-Year-Old Girl Passes Away Following River Rescue

A 13-year-old girl has tragically passed away in the hospital following a rescue operation in the River Wharfe, a scenic waterway located near Burnsall in North Yorkshire’s Yorkshire Dales. The teenager was reported missing at 18:30 BST on Sunday, but she was located and pulled from the water shortly thereafter. Despite life-saving interventions by bystanders and transport via air ambulance to the hospital, North Yorkshire Police confirmed that her injuries were fatal.

The incident marks at least the fifteenth water-related death recorded during the ongoing heatwave. Burnsall, a village nestled in Wharfedale north of Skipton, is a well-known hub for outdoor recreation. Julian Smith, the Member of Parliament for Skipton and Ripon, publicly commended the emergency responders and local community members who assisted in the weekend rescue efforts.

Expressing his condolences on social media, Smith stated, "This morning all my thoughts, prayers and wishes are with the family of the young girl who died in Burnsall yesterday. I was so sorry and sad to hear this horrific and devastating news."

Edwin Williams, chairman of the Burnsall Parish Council, described the community as devastated by the loss, noting that this event constitutes the second such tragedy in the area within two years. "The Wharfe provides so much pleasure for many and yet again is the scene of heartbreak," Williams remarked. He added that residents have gathered at the site to pay their respects, with plans underway to organize a memorial service.

This news coincides with an ongoing search in South Yorkshire for an 11-year-old boy who vanished after entering the River Don. The search entered its third day on Monday, following reports received by emergency services around 20:00 BST on Saturday at Ferry Boat Lane in Mexborough, indicating the boy had entered the water but was not seen exiting. South Yorkshire Police reported that specialist officers, underwater search teams, and Mountain Rescue volunteers resumed extensive searches at dawn on Monday, covering both river and land areas. The force emphasized that the boy’s family is receiving support and asked the public to avoid the area to facilitate the rescue operations.

Separately, a 15-year-old girl from Cheshire died in the hospital on Saturday after encountering difficulties in the sea off the Merseyside coast on Bank Holiday Monday. In a separate incident in Thornton Cleveleys, a woman in her 60s died after she and a man entered the water in an attempt to rescue their dog. Lancashire Police confirmed that the man, also in his 60s, remains in critical condition.

Additionally, a 19-year-old man died after being rescued from a lake in Nottinghamshire, and authorities found a body while searching for a man who had gotten into trouble in the Norfolk Broads.
