Rugby league legend and broadcaster Kear dies aged 71

John Kear, Esteemed Rugby League Icon and Broadcaster, Passes Away at 71

John Kear, a towering figure in rugby league history known for his dual roles as a distinguished coach and broadcaster, has died. He was 71 years old.

Kear passed away on Sunday while returning from the Challenge Cup final. At the time of his death, he was serving as part of the BBC Sport commentary team, covering the match between Wigan and Hull KR at Wembley Stadium.

The Rugby Football League (RFL) issued a statement honoring his legacy, noting that Kear was "loved and admired throughout the sport and well beyond."

Over a coaching career spanning more than 700 matches, Kear managed several prominent clubs, including Hull FC, Wakefield Trinity, and the Bradford Bulls. However, he is perhaps best remembered for his tenure at the Sheffield Eagles, where he orchestrated a stunning upset by leading the team to a Challenge Cup final victory against Wigan in 1998.

In a tribute on their website, the Eagles, who currently compete in the Championship, stated: "He will always be remembered as the coach who delivered our finest hour and as a man whose passion for rugby league touched countless players, staff and supporters throughout the game."

Born in Castleford, Kear also guided Hull FC to a surprise Challenge Cup title in 2005, defeating the Leeds Rhinos in the final held in Cardiff. Tony Sutton, the club’s chief operating officer, remarked: "Like many supporters and people associated with our club, the memories of John's time with us, particularly that wonderful day at the Challenge Cup final in Cardiff in 2005, will be in our minds today."

Kear’s international coaching record was equally impressive. He served as the head coach of the England team during the 2000 World Cup, guiding them to the semi-finals. Additionally, he led Wales for 11 years, managing the squad at the 2017 and 2021 World Cups.

Before transitioning into management, Kear enjoyed a significant playing career. Between 1978 and 1988, he made 133 appearances for his hometown club, Castleford.

Castleford honored his memory on social media, describing him as "a Castleford lad, born on Wheldon Road." The club noted that he spent a decade in the "black and amber" after debuting against St Helens at Knowsley Road on October 1, 1978. "Part of the 1986 Challenge Cup winning squad as Mal Reilly's assistant, John made 133 first-team appearances for the club, turning down other offers numerous times to stay loyal to his hometown. A true one-club man," the post read.

Nigel Wood, chair of the RFL, highlighted that after his decade-long playing stint at Castleford, Kear "found his passion for coaching." He praised Kear as "an excellent broadcast summariser with a great turn of phrase and an undiluted love and positivity for the sport." Wood added, "On behalf of the whole sport, our thoughts and condolences are with John's wife Dawn, his family, and with those who played or worked alongside him over the last 50 years."

Dave Woods, a commentator and close friend who worked alongside Kear at the BBC, remembered him as "a great rugby league man, the most passionate and eloquent of evangelists for the sport, who relished the opportunity to do that on radio and television for the BBC." Woods added, "But I'll remember him as simply the best of blokes, humble, friendly, cheerful, always smiling, always happy to talk to anyone, especially about rugby league."

James Davies, chairman of Wales Rugby League, emphasized Kear’s high standing within the community. "He was instrumental in the development of many of Wales' players over the past decade, and I know he took great pride in being part of their journey and success," Davies said.
