Six people stabbed after Arsenal victory parade
Armed Response and Arrests Mark Chaos Following Arsenal Title Parade
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that six individuals sustained stab wounds during the aftermath of Arsenal’s Premier League title victory parade in north London, resulting in 24 arrests. While the majority of those injured in the knife attacks were reported to have non-life-threatening injuries, a man in his 20s was hospitalized in critical condition following an assault on Hornsey Road just before 20:30 BST on Sunday. Police later stated that his condition has since stabilized.
To manage the massive turnout, which drew hundreds of thousands of fans to celebrate the club's championship win, more than 500 officers were deployed. The event was not without risk to law enforcement; one officer sustained a slash wound to his hand, and another was hit on the head by projectiles thrown during the festivities.
The 24 individuals detained included ten suspected of assaulting police officers, three facing suspicion of sexual assault, and one charged with grievous bodily harm related to an attack that resulted in a head injury. Additionally, four police vans parked on Theberton Street in Islington were damaged, suffering from broken lights and dents.
Earlier in the day, the London Fire Brigade had issued warnings against fans climbing onto rooftops, having previously rescued 75 people who had become stranded in such locations. According to the Met, the stabbings occurred in the evening as the bulk of the crowd dispersed. During the night, officers were authorized to use extra stop-and-search powers.
Cdr Stuart Bell, who oversaw the Met’s public order operations for the parade, praised the general conduct of the attendees. "I would like to thank the vast majority of the hundreds of thousands of Arsenal supporters who attended the day to celebrate safely and responsibly," Bell said.
However, he emphasized that authorities had made it clear that criminal behavior would not be accepted. "Unfortunately, there were pockets of anti-social behaviour and incidents where officers needed to intervene, including assaults on their colleagues," he noted. Bell added that as the night progressed and crowds thinned, further violence erupted, including what he described as "gang-related incidents."
He confirmed that officers responded quickly to each stabbing location, and investigations are currently underway.
