Trump inserts himself into the centre of America's 250th birthday celebrations

Trump Positions Himself at the Heart of America’s Semiquincentennial Festivities

As an expanding roster of musicians withdrew from, or declined to join, a lineup of concerts marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, President Donald Trump dismissed the need for their participation. Writing on his Truth Social platform, the president stated, “I don’t want so-called 'artists' that get paid far too much money, who aren't happy. I only want to be surrounded by happy people, smart people, successful people and people that know how to win.”

Trump directed his aides to explore options for positioning himself as the main draw at a scheduled 16-day “Great American State Fair” on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., later this month. Although it remains uncertain if this event will replace the musical acts with what Trump has termed a “giant Make America Great Again Rally,” the move serves as a stark example of how the president has inserted himself directly into the nation’s Independence Day observances.

Since resuming office in January 2025, Trump has often highlighted that his four-year absence from the White House means he is now presiding over historic global events during his second term. These milestones include this year’s World Cup, the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and the United States’ 250th birthday celebrations. The latter, characterized by red, white, and blue pageantry laden with patriotic fervor, appears to hold particular fascination for the president.

While the U.S. Congress chartered the official “America 250” commission ten years ago to coordinate these celebrations, Trump-aligned organizations established a rival, privately financed “Freedom 250” committee to organize their own programming. The Freedom 250 calendar features the National Mall state fair, a UFC match held at the White House, a physical fitness contest in Orlando, Florida, an August Grand Prix circuit through Washington streets, and what Trump describes as the world’s largest fireworks display on the Fourth of July.

The president regularly promotes these events on social media, utilizing AI-generated imagery to depict himself waving a green flag to start the street race and standing before a fighting octagon near the White House, flanked by lightning bolts. In contrast, the official America 250 initiative has taken a more modest approach, focusing on art exhibitions and coordinated block parties across the country.

In preparation for the month-long festivities, Trump has also prioritized “beautification” projects throughout Washington. Over a dozen fountains, including those in Sheridan Circle, Meridian Park, and Columbus Circle, have undergone repairs. Lafayette Park, located across from the White House, has been closed for extensive renovations. Additionally, a contractor is resurfacing the reflecting pool between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, though questions regarding funding and methodology have arisen. Furthermore, crews are applying 23.75-karat gold leaf to four bronze horse statues near Memorial Bridge, repaving downtown streets, and repainting lamp posts.

During discussions of these renovations, Trump occasionally adopted the tone of a municipal administrator rather than a head of state, dedicating more than 20 minutes to the improvements during a recent Cabinet meeting. “I love construction,” the president, whose career was largely defined by real estate development, remarked. “DC is looking beautiful.”

Last month, the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts sanctioned the erection of a 250-foot triumphal arch on the Virginia side of the Potomac River, opposite the Lincoln Memorial. However, the project still requires additional approvals and is confronting legal opposition from critics.

Efforts to align Independence Day celebrations with Trump’s administration have persisted throughout his tenure, with senior advisers working to explicitly connect the president to the festivities. In March, the U.S. Treasury authorized a commemorative gold coin featuring an image of Trump seated at his desk. Last week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confir
