US political commentators denied entry to UK by Home Office
Home Office Blocks Entry for US Political Voices Amidst Visa Controversy
Two prominent American left-wing commentators have been prevented from entering the United Kingdom following the revocation of their travel permissions by the Home Office. US nationals Hasan Piker, a political analyst and Twitch broadcaster, and Cenk Uygur, the co-founder and host of the YouTube program "The Young Turks," were scheduled to participate in SXSW London and an event in Oxford.
The pair have strongly condemned the UK government’s actions, asserting that their exclusion stems from their criticism of Israel. Piker has faced significant backlash for comments supportive of Hamas, while Uygur has characterized Israel’s military operations in Gaza as "barbaric."
In a post on X, Uygur expressed his frustration: "I've been banned from the UK. I attempted to board a flight to London to speak at SXSW and Oxford. I am banned for criticizing Israel. Have we lost our freedom? This represents the oppression of Western citizens by their own governments, acting on behalf of another nation."
Piker echoed these sentiments in a reply, stating, "The UK has revoked my visa as well. All at the behest of Israel. The West is abandoning 'liberal values' for a genocidal fascist foreign government. Soon, we will all become Israel."
It has been reported that the Electronic Travel Authorisations (ETA) for both men were cancelled. Such cancellations are typically based on an assessment of whether an individual poses a potential risk to the public good in the UK. Labour MP David Taylor, who had previously urged for Piker to be barred from the country, praised the Home Office’s move. "There is no justification for welcoming those who aim to foster hate and division, particularly those who have backed a proscribed terror group," Taylor wrote on X.
A representative for SXSW London, a six-day festival in Shoreditch, East London, covering business, technology, music, film, and culture, confirmed awareness of the situation. "Decisions regarding entry to the UK are solely the responsibility of the Home Office and the individuals involved," the spokesperson said. "SXSW London’s mission is to bring together a wide array of diverse voices and perspectives. We remain dedicated to delivering a program this week that encourages open dialogue and the exchange of ideas, featuring over 800 speakers, artists, and screenings."
According to a profile on the SXSW London website, which has since been removed, Piker commands a daily viewership of 30,000 for his lengthy streams. He was originally slated to appear at a session titled "How The American Left Learned To Speak The Internet." Uygur was scheduled to join a panel discussion on "Techno-Feudalism Is Here. Who Are The Lords?"
Piker’s past remarks have drawn scrutiny. In 2019, he stated that "America deserved 9/11," a comment he later admitted was inappropriate. Additionally, he has maintained views describing Hamas as "1,000 times better" than Israel and declared in an episode of Pod Save America that he "would vote for Hamas over Israel every single time." Piker, who is Uygur’s nephew, told Variety last year that while he is not antisemitic, he is "anti-Israel."
The Community Security Trust, a Jewish advocacy group, welcomed the visa denials. In a statement, they supported "the government's recognition that there must be consequences when public figures cross the line into hate speech." The group noted, "While criticism of Israel is entirely legitimate, Piker has a record that goes far beyond robust or controversial political speech, including rhetoric that contains antisemitic themes."
Conversely, Green Party leader Zack Polanski labeled the visa denials as "a really grim decision." He argued, "People often talk about the dangerous road we'd go down under a Reform government - this is another clear warning we're down there already. A Labour government doing everything possible to silence criticism of the Israeli government." Liberty Human Rights also voiced criticism of the government’s actions, with director Akiko Har...
