New York police investigate videos of men emerging from city's sewer system
Title: NYPD Probes Footage of Individuals Emerging from New York City Sewers
New York City law enforcement has launched an investigation following the circulation of several recent videos depicting groups of individuals entering and exiting the municipal sewer network. Surveillance footage from various neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens appears to capture these activities. According to US media reports citing police sources, the men are suspected of scavenging for valuable items buried underground. It is not yet confirmed if a single organization is responsible for all the recorded incidents.
In one particular clip, multiple men are observed lifting a manhole cover, descending into the infrastructure, and resurfacing several hours later.
The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) issued a strong warning regarding these actions. "Entering the sewer system is both illegal and extremely dangerous," a DEP spokesperson told the BBC. The agency highlighted the severe risks involved, noting that sewers harbor "numerous hazards, including noxious and potentially deadly gases, unstable surfaces, flooding risks, and confined spaces." Consequently, the spokesperson advised the public to "never enter a pipe, drain, catch basin, manhole, or outfall."
The NYPD received reports last week concerning unidentified persons removing manhole covers and going underground. "The individuals then fled the location in an unknown vehicle to parts unknown," the police department stated in a comment to the BBC. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported, no arrests have been made, and the probe is continuing.
Police sources told CBS News, the BBC’s partner in the US, that the men seen climbing out of the manholes are likely "treasure hunters" or urban explorers in search of valuables. If apprehended, these individuals could face charges related to burglary.
