Trump-backed candidate in Iowa loses primary

Title: Iowa Governor Primary Upset: Trump-Endorsed Feenstra Defeated

Randy Feenstra, a three-term Iowa congressman and perceived frontrunner for his party’s gubernatorial nomination, conceded the race on Tuesday after losing a pivotal primary contest. The defeat comes despite receiving a last-minute endorsement from former President Donald Trump, marking a significant blow to the president’s previously unblemished track record of political endorsements.

Feenstra, known for his steadfast support of Trump, was defeated by Zach Lahn, a farmer and businessman who ran on a platform that, while sharing some Trumpian rhetoric, ultimately resonated more with the state’s grassroots conservatives. Lahn campaigned on slogans such as “Make Iowa Healthy Again” and “Iowa first,” advocating for restrictions on foreign and out-of-state ownership of Iowa land and criticizing “global elites.” He also secured support from Turning Point USA, the conservative organization established by the late Charlie Kirk, as well as voters who viewed Feenstra as too entrenched in the Washington establishment.

The loss undermines the recent trend where a Trump endorsement appeared to guarantee victory. In recent weeks, Trump-backed challengers successfully unseated Congressman Thomas Massie in Kentucky and Senator Bill Cassidy. Additionally, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton secured the Republican Senate nomination over incumbent John Cornyn, though it seemed increasingly likely Paxton would have won without presidential intervention.

Feenstra’s defeat may indicate that Trump’s political instincts are misaligned in Iowa, a state that has supported the president in three consecutive elections but is showing signs of growing dissatisfaction. Economic pressures have weighed heavily on the Hawkeye State; Trump’s trade tariffs and the subsequent Chinese response have adversely affected Iowa’s agricultural sector. Compounding these issues, the conflict between the US-Israeli alliance and Iran has driven up fuel and fertilizer costs. Consequently, a recent YouGov/Economist poll shows Trump holding a net approval rating of -20% in Iowa.

This local discontent has energized Democrats, who see an opportunity to flip the governorship. Lahn will now face Democratic State Auditor Rob Sand in November. Democrats are also targeting the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Joni Ernst. In that contest, centrist Paralympian Josh Turek, who garnered backing from national Democrats, won his party’s primary and will face Republican Ashley Hinson. While several election analysis firms have categorized both the governor’s and Senate races as toss-ups or leaning Republican, the dynamic remains competitive.

Although Texas often dominates national political discourse, the key to Democratic success this November may be found in Iowa’s cornfields. Once a reliably Democratic state, Iowa has trended Republican in recent years. However, the current political climate suggests that the Hawkeye State warrants close scrutiny as the general election approaches.

Meanwhile, Trump has remained largely absent from the public eye over the past six days, limiting his visibility to prerecorded interviews with sympathetic media outlets and posts on Truth Social. On the platform, he claimed that negotiations with Iran regarding the war “have been going on continuously.” Although these talks are ongoing, they appear to be making little headway. Domestically, Trump’s administration also faced a setback by abandoning plans to establish a $1.8 billion (£1.3 billion) “anti-weaponisation” fund, which was intended to compensate individuals who claimed to be targets of political investigations by previous administrations.
