'Big Short' investor Michael Burry says neither SpaceX nor Anthropic is worth $1 trillion
Title: Michael Burry Dismisses $1 Trillion Valuations for SpaceX and Anthropic
Michael Burry, the investor renowned for his accurate prediction of the 2008 housing crisis featured in the film "The Big Short," has publicly expressed significant skepticism regarding the multi-trillion-dollar valuations assigned to both SpaceX and AI firm Anthropic.
In recent threads on his Substack platform, Burry challenged the financial worth of Elon Musk’s aerospace and artificial intelligence venture, as well as the developer behind the popular Claude AI model. Regarding SpaceX, which recently submitted its S-1 IPO filing, Burry argued that the documents do not justify a price tag of $1 trillion, let alone the rumored $2 trillion target.
"Any move up will be on hype and technicals," Burry wrote in a subscriber chat launched on Saturday. "Nothing in that S-1 suggests it is worth $1 trillion let alone $2 trillion."
SpaceX’s prospectus, filed on May 20, disclosed that the company generated $18.7 billion in revenue last year while incurring a net loss of $4.9 billion. Despite these figures, market speculation suggests the company is aiming for a public valuation of approximately $2 trillion.
Burry’s doubts extend to Anthropic, which revealed last Thursday that it had secured funding at a $965 billion valuation, a move that could facilitate a public listing at an even higher value. Burry remains unconvinced that the AI startup deserves such a premium.
"There is no guarantee, and not even a strong likelihood, that Anthropic is long-term worth anywhere near $1 trillion," he stated in the chat.
He criticized the current business model of developing advanced AI, describing it as "far too expensive, too much brute force." Burry predicted that computing power would eventually become commoditized, similar to how internet access is viewed today. He characterized the current surge in demand as a "false demand signal," reiterating his previous warnings that the trend of "tokenmaxxing" is unsustainable.
According to Burry, the frantic competition to acquire computing resources for AI model training is driving infrastructure buildouts and orders that will exceed future requirements. He humorously noted that before considering a $1 trillion investment in Anthropic, he would need to count to one trillion, estimating it would take "240,000 years" before he might reconsider.
Neither SpaceX nor Anthropic immediately responded to Business Insider’s requests for comment.
Burry gained widespread recognition for his short bet against the mid-2000s housing bubble, which was detailed in the book and movie "The Big Short." Famous for his bearish outlook on market crashes and recessions, he transitioned from managing a hedge fund to sharing his investment insights on Substack late last year.
