WOMAD festival cancelled in Glasgow over low ticket sales
WOMAD Festival in Glasgow Scrapped Due to Poor Ticket Demand
The inaugural staging of the World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) festival in Glasgow has been called off, with organizers citing insufficient ticket sales as the primary reason. Originally scheduled for July 3 and 4 in Kelvingrove Park, the event was a collaboration between the festival brand and Glasgow Life.
In a statement, Glasgow Life described the cancellation as a "difficult decision" that was approached with serious consideration. To mitigate the impact on attendees, the organization confirmed that all ticket holders would receive full refunds. Additionally, affected customers were offered discounted access to the upcoming WOMAD event taking place in Neston Park, North Wiltshire, from July 23 to 26.
Founded in 1982 in Somerset by former Genesis singer Peter Gabriel, WOMAD is a globally recognized festival that has operated in 30 countries, including nations such as New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore, Chile, and Spain. The Glasgow edition was poised to showcase a diverse array of genres, ranging from folk, traditional music, and jazz to hip-hop, soul, and experimental sounds.
The Scottish debut was set to feature a lineup including London-based reggae singer and songwriter Hollie Cook, Pakistani instrumentalist Ustad Noor Bakhsh, and the Stornoway folk-rock group Peat and Diesel. However, organizers explained that the combination of a saturated market and low ticket uptake rendered the Glasgow event financially unviable for its first year.
"While audience response to the programme and the vision for the event was extremely positive, ticket sales did not reach the level required to deliver the festival sustainably in its inaugural year," organizers stated. They noted that launching a new large-scale event in a "competitive and crowded market" presented significant challenges at this time.
Expressing regret for the disappointment caused, particularly to those who had already purchased tickets, the organizers issued a sincere apology. They also extended their gratitude to the artists, contractors, and suppliers who had supported the planning process for the event.
