England's Housby ruled out of Commonwealth Games

England's Housby ruled out of Commonwealth Games

England’s Housby Withdraws from Commonwealth Games Due to Injury

England international Helen Housby has been forced to withdraw from this summer’s Commonwealth Games following a back injury. The 31-year-old was initially expected to miss a significant portion of the Suncorp Super Netball season while playing for the New South Wales Swifts in Australia, as announced by both England Netball and the Swifts in April. However, subsequent medical scans have confirmed that the injury is severe enough to prevent her from competing in the Glasgow tournament, which commences on 23 July.

Housby expressed her disappointment on Instagram, stating she was "devastated to be ruled out in this manner." The shooter holds a special place in Commonwealth Games history, having scored the last-minute goal to secure England’s first-ever gold medal by defeating favorites Australia on the Gold Coast eight years ago.

Despite the injury, Housby remains focused on her future. "Representing Team England is an honour and holds some of my proudest and fondest memories," she said. "Despite the setback I'm more determined than ever to come back stronger and get back on court as soon as possible, especially with the World Cup in Sydney on the horizon."

England, currently ranked third globally, are placed in Pool A alongside top-ranked Australia, South Africa, Malawi, Tonga, and Northern Ireland. Their campaign begins against Northern Ireland on 25 July. Housby added: "I truly believe our squad can beat anybody and I'm looking forward to watching as a fan this time around."

Analysis: A Significant Setback for the Roses

Housby’s absence represents a major loss for England. She is one of only two active players from the 2018 gold-medal-winning squad, alongside wing attack Nat Metcalf. Her contribution to that historic victory was pivotal; the image of her celebrating with a tongue stained blue by energy drinks after the last-gasp winner against Australia remains an iconic moment in the team's history.

Her withdrawal is a considerable blow to a Roses side that already lacks extensive major tournament experience. Housby would have been a first-choice candidate for the shooting circle, but her impact extended beyond scoring. Her leadership, determination, and winning pedigree have frequently been instrumental in driving the team’s performance.

At 31, this injury may mark the end of Housby’s Commonwealth Games career. Replacing such a beloved and influential figure will be challenging. Consequently, devising a tactical "Plan B" for the Glasgow tournament presents the first major test for Anna Stembridge, England’s new head coach.
