Fenerbahce presidential rivals both want Greenwood
Title: Both Contenders for Fenerbahce Presidency Seek Mason Greenwood
Mason Greenwood has emerged as the primary transfer objective for both candidates competing in the upcoming Fenerbahce presidential election. The former Manchester United and England international has endured a challenging period at his current club, Marseille. Marseille’s newly appointed sporting director, Gregory Lorenzi, indicated last week that the Ligue 1 side is open to receiving offers for the 24-year-old. Greenwood is bound to the French club by three years remaining on the five-year contract he signed in July 2024, following his permanent departure from Old Trafford.
The election to determine the future leadership of the Turkish club is set for Sunday, with former president Aziz Yildirim and Hakan Safi currently vying for the top position. Reports suggest that agreeing on personal terms with Greenwood should not present a significant obstacle for either candidate.
Greenwood has been working to reconstruct his professional life since leaving Manchester United, following allegations of attempted rape and assault which were dismissed in February 2023. Although criminal charges were dropped, an internal investigation at United concluded that he could no longer represent the club. His time at Marseille has seen him net 48 goals in 81 appearances. This season, he ended as joint second in the Ligue 1 top scorer list with 16 goals, trailing only Rennes’ Esteban Lepaul.
His recent history includes an apology from new Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi in April, who had previously defended the striker during his tenure at Marseille. Meanwhile, United retained a "sizeable sell-on fee" in the deal that saw Greenwood move to Marseille for 31.6 million euros (£26.6m), according to club sources. The player has also reportedly drawn interest from Serie A club Roma recently.
Fenerbahce, which secured second place in the Turkish Super Lig for the fifth consecutive season, will begin their Champions League campaign in the second qualifying round in July.
