Van der Breggen wins time trial to take Giro lead

Van der Breggen Claims Time Trial Victory to Don Pink Jersey at Giro

Dutch cyclist Anna van der Breggen has secured the leader’s pink jersey at the women’s Giro d’Italia after triumphing in the 12.7km individual time trial. The four-time previous winner of the race completed stage four in a time of 31 minutes and 38 seconds.

World time trial champion Marlen Reusser finished second, trailing by one minute and four seconds, while Dutch rider Demi Vollering placed third, a further six seconds behind Reusser.

“I didn’t expect that one,” admitted Van der Breggen regarding her performance. “This performance is a surprise.”

The victory marks Van der Breggen’s fourth stage win in the race, adding to her previous overall triumphs in 2015, 2017, 2020, and 2021. With five stages remaining, the win grants her a one-minute and four-second lead over Reusser in the general classification.

Looking ahead to the final leg of the race, Van der Breggen acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead. “I’m going to have to defend this jersey, it won’t be easy,” she said. She is currently pursuing Fabiana Luperini’s record of five Giro titles. “The mountains are coming. There’s also rain forecast over the coming days.”
