Meta’s AI agent for WhatsApp Business is now available globally

Meta Unveils Global Rollout of WhatsApp Business AI Agent

Meta has officially expanded the global availability of its AI-driven customer support tool, now branded as the Meta Business Agent, within WhatsApp. This move marks a significant strategic shift for the platform, aiming to transform WhatsApp from a primary communication channel into a comprehensive workflow solution for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The announcement follows a nearly two-year beta period during which Meta tested AI agents for customer support in markets such as India and Mexico. The new agent is designed to handle a variety of tasks, including responding to customer inquiries, suggesting products, scheduling appointments, and qualifying sales leads. If a situation requires human intervention, the bot can seamlessly transfer the conversation to a staff member. Additionally, Meta is extending the availability of this bot to Instagram Direct Messages.

In parallel with the global launch, Meta is piloting a feature that provides daily summaries of overnight chats and offers analytical insights. This functionality is currently being tested with select accounts across WhatsApp Business, Instagram Pro, Messenger, and the Meta Business Suite.

Looking ahead, the company is developing additional capabilities for the agent, such as conducting market research, emphasizing product features, managing user calendars, and integrating with external tools to gather competitive intelligence. Meta is also working on improving discoverability, ensuring that businesses appear in search results and that contact details can be easily shared during chats. Furthermore, the tech giant is constructing a platform that enables larger enterprises to build custom agents capable of integrating with systems like Shopify, Zendesk, and Shopee.

Regarding monetization, Meta plans to incorporate the AI agent into certain tiers of its WhatsApp Business Premium subscription. For large businesses, the cost will be determined by token usage. This pricing model represents a crucial evolution for WhatsApp, which has historically depended on revenue from business messaging fees and click-to-WhatsApp advertisements.
