Boy missing in river named as search continues
Search for Mackenzie Swift Continues After Boy Disappears in River Don
Authorities have identified the 11-year-old boy missing from the River Don in South Yorkshire as Mackenzie Swift, as extensive rescue efforts persist. The child was last seen entering the water near Ferry Boat Lane in Mexborough around 20:00 BST on Saturday.
South Yorkshire Police described the situation as a "heartbreaking" ordeal for the family, comparing it to "every parent's worst nightmare." The search operation has involved specialized underwater teams and Mountain Rescue volunteers. However, a police spokesperson delivered grim news regarding the likelihood of survival: "Our family liaison officers have sadly had the heartbreaking conversation with Mackenzie's family that if he had not exited the river on Saturday, he could not have survived in the water for this length of time."
Despite these concerns, investigators have not yet uncovered evidence suggesting the boy managed to leave the water. "Sadly, none of our enquiries so far have found any indication that he got out of the water," the spokesperson stated. Officers continue to provide support to Mackenzie’s family and have requested that the public refrain from visiting the site. Police confirmed that personnel would remain on location overnight, with search operations scheduled to resume at dawn on Tuesday.
Chief Superintendent Pete Thorp appealed for public restraint, noting that while people are eager to assist, they should leave the work to professionals. "I must ask that you leave this work to the professional search teams," Thorp said. "Please do not put yourselves or others in danger by searching in and around water, and if asked to leave by officers, please understand this is for your own safety and to ensure our efforts focus solely on finding Mackenzie." He added that the thoughts of everyone involved in the search remain with the boy and his family.
This tragedy occurs amid a series of water-related fatalities across the UK during the recent heatwave. In North Yorkshire, a 13-year-old girl died in hospital on Sunday after being discovered in the River Wharfe near Burnsall in the Yorkshire Dales; she had gone missing in a river earlier that day. Additionally, a 15-year-old girl from Cheshire passed away in hospital on Saturday following difficulties in the sea off the Merseyside coast on Bank Holiday Monday.
Further incidents include the death of a woman in her 60s on Saturday in Thornton Cleveleys. She and a man, also in his 60s, entered the water attempting to rescue their dog. While the woman died, the man remains in critical condition in the hospital, according to Lancashire Police. Elsewhere, a 19-year-old man died after being pulled from a lake in Nottinghamshire, and a body was recovered during a search for a man who encountered trouble in the water in the Norfolk Broads.
