Two Held in Connection with Fatal Minivan Blaze That Killed Four Migrant Workers in Italy

Italian authorities have detained two Pakistani nationals on suspicion of murder following the discovery of four deceased migrant farm workers inside a charred minivan, as reported by Italian media. The wreckage was located at a fuel station situated near a village within the expansive agricultural district of southern Calabria.

Security camera footage captured the moments preceding the tragedy, showing two individuals preventing the van’s doors from being opened from the interior and pouring a flammable liquid into the vehicle before igniting it. This incident appears to be part of a disturbing pattern; recent months have seen at least 14 separate arson attacks targeting cars and minivans transporting Pakistani migrants in the region. These crimes have occurred amid rising tensions between migrant groups regarding the allocation of agricultural labor and housing.

Emergency services responded to reports of the burning vehicle at approximately 13:00 local time (11:00 GMT) on Tuesday. Once firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze, they uncovered the remains of four individuals who had perished inside. The two suspects were subsequently taken into custody, with investigators citing the CCTV evidence as a primary basis for the arrests.

According to Italian news outlets, a fifth occupant, identified as an Afghan national, survived the inferno. He recounted to reporters that he managed to escape by smashing a window. The survivor identified the victims as three fellow Afghans and one Pakistani, all of whom were employed in the agricultural sector. He explained that the attack was triggered by a conflict after the two arrested men demanded payment for transportation, a request the passengers declined. Furthermore, the survivor claimed that the workers had not received wages for their labor in the local strawberry fields, despite having been provided with meals and shelter.

The brutal nature of the crime has sent shockwaves through Italy. Roberto Occhiuto, the president of the Calabria region, described the incident as "inhuman," stating that the news "shakes faith in humanity." In response, the CGIL labor union, as quoted by the Ansa news agency, called for immediate measures to "combat the abominations of daily life endured by workers, often migrants, in our countryside."
