Bashir returns to England team for first Test
Bashir Reinstated in England’s Test Squad for Opener Against New Zealand
Spinner Shoaib Bashir has been reinstated as England’s premier off-spinner for the inaugural Test against New Zealand, marking his return to the side after being excluded from the entire Ashes campaign. The 22-year-old has been included in the 12-man squad for the series debut at Lord’s on Thursday and is expected to secure a spot in the starting XI, with selectors currently weighing the composition of their pace battery. Uncapped fast bowler Sonny Baker has also been named, potentially competing with Gus Atkinson for the final position in the attack.
Bashir’s last appearance for England occurred during the third Test against India at Lord’s last July. Despite playing with a broken finger, he claimed the decisive wicket to secure a thrilling victory. Although he recovered in time for the Ashes tour, he was omitted from the squad throughout England’s 4-1 defeat. While the spinner faced difficulties in net sessions and warm-up games, the England management attributed his exclusion to pitch conditions deemed unsuitable for spin.
"We firmly believe in Bash as an international cricketer," England head coach Brendon McCullum told BBC Sport. "When I look back to why he wasn't required in Australia, it wasn't to do with how the ball was coming out of his hand per se, we just felt the conditions were not conducive to spin bowling – as did Australia. We remain hugely confident and optimistic about Bash as a cricketer and the role he can play for us."
The 12-man squad for the first Test comprises Ben Duckett, Emilio Gay, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jamie Smith, Ben Stokes (captain), Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, Ollie Robinson, Sonny Baker, and Shoaib Bashir.
Bashir, who made his England debut at age 20 during the 2024 India tour after appearing in just six first-class matches for Somerset, has established himself as the team’s top spinner despite not being Somerset’s primary choice. He has claimed 68 wickets in 19 Tests. Following his departure from Somerset at the end of last season, Bashir joined Derbyshire, where he has taken 15 wickets in six County Championship games this summer.
His selection at Lord’s sees him displace leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, who is missing out on his first home Test. McCullum praised the impact of Bashir’s county move.
"What we've seen since he made the shift in county and been able to get game time under his belt – we know he's an immensely cricketer, and he just needs more and more opportunity," McCullum added. "You can only do so much in the nets. Playing cricket for a young spinner, being able to work through situations and scenarios, to get some game time under his belt over the last little while has been hugely beneficial. He's growing at quite an amazing speed, not just in his spin bowling, but even just his presence, and his overall athleticism."
In other team changes, opener Emilio Gay will make his Test debut, replacing Zak Crawley, who was dropped following a poor Ashes performance. Jacob Bethell, having recovered from a finger injury, will bat at number three in his first home Test appearance.
