British couple lose Iran jail sentence appeal, family says

UK Couple’s Appeal Against Iran Espionage Conviction Rejected

The family of a British couple imprisoned in Iran on espionage allegations has confirmed that their appeal against a ten-year prison term has been dismissed. Lindsay and Craig Foreman were detained in January 2025 as they traversed Iran on a global motorcycle journey. Facing accusations of spying, which they have firmly rejected, the pair were handed down their sentences in February. Currently incarcerated at Tehran’s Evin Prison, both individuals are participating in a hunger strike.

A representative from the Foremans’ legal team in the United Kingdom informed the BBC that the court provided no justification for rejecting the appeal. Lindsay’s son, Joe Bennett, highlighted that the couple was barred from attending their own appeal proceedings. He characterized this exclusion as a "serious human rights violation," citing it as a primary motivation for their decision to cease eating. Bennett further alleged that the authorities pressured the couple to sign documents written in Farsi, a language they do not speak, which the pair refused to do.

Haydee Dijkstal, a barrister involved in their defense, stated that Craig and Lindsay are innocent travelers subjected to arbitrary detention. She noted that their fundamental rights have been consistently and severely breached throughout their imprisonment.

According to Bennett, the case has now moved to the Supreme Court. However, the family remains unclear about the subsequent legal procedures or expected timelines. "It's really tough, I don't know where to turn now," Bennett told the BBC. "I'm massively worried for them. But it's hard because I can't talk to them."

Communication with the couple has been severed since they granted an interview to the BBC over a month ago, prompting the start of their hunger strike. Family sources report that Craig, a carpenter, has abstained from food for 25 days. Lindsay, a life coach, briefly ate but has now been on strike for 16 days. Information regarding their condition is limited to reports from the families of their cellmates. Craig, who has consumed sugar, milk, and water, is reportedly becoming increasingly thin and weak. Bennett expressed difficulty in obtaining updates on his mother’s status, noting that the last consular visit occurred in December.

The Foreign Office, which advises against travel to Iran, has condemned the couple's detention as "unjustified and appalling." Current official guidance warns that British citizenship or ties to the UK may suffice for Iranian authorities to justify an arrest.

Richard Ratcliffe, whose wife Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was held in Iran for nearly six years, described the appeal’s failure as a pivotal event. He argued that the Revolutionary Court functions as a "theatre of punishment" rather than a legitimate judicial body. Ratcliffe suggested the outcome serves as a signal from Iranian leadership to the British government. While Zaghari-Ratcliffe was eventually freed following the UK’s settlement of a substantial debt to Iran, British officials have never officially linked the two events.

The Foreign Office affirmed its commitment to working toward the safe return of Craig and Lindsay. In the interim, Bennett hopes for a visit from the British embassy to deliver essential supplies, such as vitamins and clean clothing. While he urges his parents to end the strike for the sake of their health, he acknowledges that they view their bodies as their sole means of protest. "The trouble is that I don't see an end to this at the moment, which is the hardest thing," Bennett concluded. "We just want them home."
